only brought fame and honor to Cecilia
but catapulted the Fil-Am experience to
international awareness. Her literary
achievements and the service she has
rendered to Filipino and Fil-American
communities have been given recognition
through the following awards: Cebu
Outstanding Individual Awards 1998,
California Arts Council Fellowship
Fiction, Brody Arts Fund Award, among
others.

Turning Illness into Inspiration
A
cerebral hemorrhage impaired her power
of speech and partially limited the use
of her left hand. These limitations did
not discourage her from pursuing her
passion for the arts. She is now an
acclaimed writer and visual artist whose
numerous card messages and designs have
captured the hearts of the many who have
received them.

Practicing Public Relations in the
Service of Socio-Civic Causes
Her
work as a Senior Public Relations
Coordinator for a prestigious and
profitable corporation led to her active
involvement in socio-civic projects and
causes. Finding fulfillment in this
arena and with the desire to develop
young minds, she produced two
values-oriented TV programs for
children, entitled “That’s Life,” and
“KADA Kids.” The programs were
consistently nominated by the Catholic
Mass Media Awards, for best educational
show for the youth.

Exploring Breakthroughs in Cancer Cure
and Prevention
Her innovative
endoscopic procedure holds great promise
of a cure for early esophagal cancer.
She was awarded a grant to study the
usefulness of endoscopic ultrasonography
in the early detection of pancreatic
cancer. Presently an Assistant Professor
at the Johns Hopkins University School
of Medicine, she is also a published
author in many prestigious medical
journals.

Upon her
retirement as an educator in Math and
Theology, her generous spirit continued
to seek new ways of serving God. She is
currently involved in her community's
outreach program for children who are

Environment
A housewife and
mother, she initiated the “Greening of
Katipunan” project, which transformed a

project.

A multi-awarded
psychiatrist, she has devoted her career
to the protection and support of women
and children who have suffered violence
in any form. As Program Coordinator of

Women's Desk, she helps restore victims
of abuse to health of mind, body, and
spirit and enables them to live
productive lives.

Public Service
Finding meaning
and honor in being of service to
disadvantaged Filipinos, she has built a
career in social work and public
service. In recognition of her
exemplary integrity and noble service,
she was appointed as Secretary of the
Department of Social Welfare and
Development, where she formulated
programs and policies to address the
plight of the underprivileged. She also
served as Chairperson of the Civil
Service Commission and the Career
Executive Board. Her service to the
government and to her constituencies has
been commended by various renowned
institutions.

Education
A distinguished
pre-school educator, she is a proponent
of total student formation, which
includes both academic achievement and
value formation. She developed a
curriculum focused on enhancing both
emotional and intellectual capabilities,
and introduced the innovative "Learning
Center Approach" to schools. With this
vision in mind, she established schools
in depressed areas and promoted
education for caregivers.

Fostering Education, Hospice Care, and
Overseas Community Recreation
As
founder of the Hong Kong-based Chinese
International School, she offered
dual-language education to children of
all nationalities, and has continued to
set up private schools through her
Independent Schools Foundation. In her
capacity as Executive Director of the
Society for the Promotion of Hospice
Care, she persuaded the Hong Kong
government to incorporate into its
health program, proper care and
attention to the terminally ill. She
also founded the Hong Kong Bayanihan
Trust, which provides recreational and
community facilities for Filipino
overseas domestic helpers.

and Street Children
As
an educator in the field of speech and
drama, she employs the use of
story-telling techniques and creative

church groups. Her volunteer work with
the UP Pahinungod, allows her to share
her expertise with neighboring schools.

also been spent on programs for street
children in her hometown.

Preserving Philippine Cultural Heritage
As
curator of the Metropolitan Museum for
several years, she has ensured the
preservation of Filipino culture and
art. She organized the permanent art
exhibit of women painters at Miriam
College and St. Scholastica’s College.
For her cultural leadership and service
in developing the visual arts programs
between the Philippines and France, she
was awarded the French Government
Insignia, Chavalier de L’Ordre des Artes
et Lettres in 1980.

Her
company, Tamilee Industries, has been
synonymous with Christmas. She has

indigenous raw materials as a means of
generating income for rural communities.

Bridging Architectural Aesthetics with
Community Development
She
has directed her career in architecture,
industrial design and fine arts to the
study and development of communities.
This academic lecturer and community
builder has trained local researchers on
cultural heritage studies and worked
with the people of Palawan to provide
them with community shelters, nutrition
education, and development strategies
and solutions that are culturally
sensitive.

Restoring Public Trust in the Judiciary
She
rose from the ranks first as Regional
Trial Court Judge, then as Presiding
Justice of the Court of Appeals and
achieved the highest post in the
judiciary as Associate Justice of the
Supreme Court. Justice Alice is the
quintessential career jurist, the
epitome of woman empowerment as she
continues to improve the administration
of justice in the expedient resolution
of cases.

Filipino migrant workers found a

in Gina. She brought their plight to

Center (1989-1996) and Asian Center for
Women’s Human Rights (1997-2000).

Indigent Scholars
From challenging circumstances, he
overcame life’s adversities and became a
successful entrepreneur. A recipient of
several national achievement awards, he
also became an international figure by
breaking cultural barriers as Philippine
representative in various international
conferences sponsored by the United
Nations. His generosity of spirit is
manifest in the support he extends to
indigent scholars and his service to
community by leading 100 youngsters in
cleaning city street and canals as
Sangguniang Kabataan Chairman. He was
conferred the Mother Mary Joseph Award
in 1993.

Promoting Benefits for the Working Woman
As
former Labor Attaché to Singapore and
Congresswoman for the Labor Sector, she
formulated policies on full employment,
higher remuneration, adequate working
conditions, and much improved social
security services for the working
woman. She is the first Asian woman to
be elected to the World Confederation of
Organizations in the Teaching
Profession, with a membership of
fourteen million teachers from ten
countries.

Her
name has always been equated with the
best of Philippine writing and
teaching. She continues to create new
courses on Pop Culture and Mass Media

15 books edited and written to her name,
100 scholarly articles and reviews in
various publications. Her creativity
has made literature relevant to the
present generation of students.

Feeding Underprivileged Communities in
Manila
While President of the Hotel and
Restaurant Association of the
Philippines (HRAP), Myrna, together with
a Catholic missionary group channeled
the revenues from their excellent French
restaurant to feed the community around
their area in Otis, Manila. This
program inspired other HRAP members to
participate in this worthwhile
endeavor.

Giving Prominence to Filipino Folk
Architecture
She
redefined the standard of folk
architecture by introducing Filipino
materials into the playing field. The
lowly bamboo gained acceptance and
prominence through her work among
eminent structures and notable
buildings. Her love for what is
Filipino inspired her to promote local
culture through craft shows and cultural
programs featuring Pinoy artists and
musicians.

Returning in 1990 to the Tionko farm
badly ravaged by war between government
soldiers and communist rebels, she
rehabilitated the community. Her work
involved the setting up of a day care
center, providing scholarships to
students, cultivating the basic skills
of mothers and housewives, and teaching
out-of-school youth to replant trees.
To uplift the economic conditions of the
community and provide livelihood for its
people, she set up a hand weaving
center, utilizing abaca and cotton.
Presently, these products are exported
all over the world.

Inspiring Others to Discover Life’s
Splendor in Art
Lourdes is known in the art world as
Pardo de Leon. In 1988, she was a
recipient of the Cultural Center of the
Philippines ’ Thirteen Artists’ Awards.
In 1999, she was awarded a study grant
by the Italian Embassy where she was
part of a 4-man exhibit which won the
best show by the Swedish-Italian
Cultural Foundation in Venice. Her large
scale and figurative works, among them
the mural of the Luna Tower lobby at
Rockwell Plant, has graced several art
shows here and abroad.
